    First untethered jailbreak arrives for iOS 7 users

    iOS 7 users have a reason to rejoice , Evad3rs has just released the untethered Evasi0n iOS 7 – 7.0.4 jailbreak version for the latest iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices.
    You can head to the Evad3rs official website to get the update. The untethered jailbreak lets Mac and Windows users freely modify iOS 7 on the supported devices.

    As always, there are risks associated with unofficial OS tweaks. Saurik (Cydia creator) warns that he wasn’t made aware of the jailbreak and that the Cydia build isn’t official nor updated so users would be downloading it it at their own risk.
    The evasion jailbreak includes a Chinese ‘alternative’ app store, which is full of cracked versions of real apps and games found in Apple’s App Store. This store, named TaiG, is no longer installed by Default on this particular jailbreak.

    The freebies start on 26th December and will continue until January 6th. The daily gifts will be available for download only for 24 hours to download.

    Apple is bringing the “12 Days of Gifts” offer to the India app store this year. The offer starts on 26th December, and will continue till 6th January next year. Unlike last year when this offer was available only in very select countries, Canada being one, it has been extended to more countries this time around. While Apple has not specified the countries which will get this offer, the iTunes listing suggests the app will be available in the following languages - English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
    The app is available for iPhones, iPads and the iPod Touch running iOS 7.
    Apple says that the freebies will include songs, apps, books and movies, and will be valid for only one day. Once the 24 hours are up, the gift will change, and the outgoing offer will not be valid anymore, with the free price tag.
    You can download the “12 Days of Gifts” app on your phone, and get set to download 12 free gifts from Apple’s side, this new year. We downloaded this app from the India App Store on our iPhone, and this is what the counter shows us! We are hopeful India will not be dropped at the last minute. Just in case you haven’t upgraded your compatible iOS device with iOS 7, this could be one reason to!

    WhatsApp Messenger for iOS updated with iOS 7-themed design, new features


    Popular messaging app WhatsApp Messenger for iOS has been updated with an iOS 7-inspired design. The new version is tailor made for Apple's new iOS 7 OS, which has a flat design.
    In addition to the new look, this new version brings along a slew of new features like broadcast lists, improved share location, larger thumbs, new notification alerts and sounds to name a few.
    With broadcast lists, users are allowed to set and save groups of people or contacts for bulk messaging. Earlier, users had to select recipients each time they wished to send a message. Other notable improvements included are support for iOS 7 ringtones, text size, hassle free way to manage blocked contacts and the ability to crop images. Apart from this, users will also notice improved location sharing, support for 3D maps and larger image thumbnails in chats.
    After users update to the new version of WhatsApp, it also prompts users to setup iCloud backup. Users from now on have an option to backup their chats on Apple's cloud storage service. In the case a user decides to change his phone or restore his iPhone, they can restore all their chats easily.
    The new version is getting positive customer feedback on the App store. WhatsApp Messenger is available for free on the App Store.

    mPassport Seva app now available for iOS and Windows Phone users

    mPassport Seva app now available for iOS and Windows Phone users

    The Ministry of External Affairs launched the mPassport Seva app on Android platform in March and now has extended the app to Windows and Apple iOS platforms. The mPassport Seva app provides passport-related information and helps in tracking passport application status.
    The mPassport Seva app is being developed in a Public-Private-Partnership mode with IT services major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). TCS said in a press release, "The app gives users information about the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or District Passport Cell (DPC) in a district where they can submit the passport application. Users can also search the nearest PSK based on PIN code. In certain states and districts, the users can even search for police stations through the app."
    The app has a fee calculator feature that enables users to find out the applicable fee based on the service and mode of submission. Users can also track the status of their passport applications by providing the file number and date of birth. The app also updates the delivery status once dispatched.
    MEA is also working on an upgraded version of the mPassport Seva app which will allow users to apply for passports as well as pay the passport application fee via their smartphones. The app will let users apply for passports via their smartphone and even make passport application fees online via their credit or debit cards. The applicant can collect their allotted 'application reference number' through the nearest PSK.
    According to a statement the MEA has issued more than 85 lakh passports this year as compared to 74 lakh passports issued last year.

    BlackBerry Messenger for Android shows no signs of slowing down, with the application crossing 10 million downloads on Android alone, worldwide. However, not everyone who downloaded BBM on their Android or iOS devices could sign in immediately, because BlackBerry had deployed the waiting list method for a majority of users to ensure there was no repeat of the server load issues that the first release attempt faced. However, that test of patience has now been removed as well, with anyone downloading BBM on their smartphone can now sign up / sign in immediately.
    The popularity of BBM during this initial phase of availability can be measured by the respective app stores’ rating of the app. Apple’s App Store lists BBM in the top three free apps listing, while Google Play Store has it at the top spot in the Top New Free Android Apps list, at least at the time of writing this.
    BBM’s popularity on Android and iOS is critical good news for BlackBerry, particularly because the company was betting big on huge download numbers to get the cross platform BBM on the map, where Whatsapp leads at the moment.

    BlackBerry has announced the launch of the BBM messaging app for iOS and Android. The app is available to users for download from the Google Play store, Apple App store and select Samsung App stores for free.
    If you are one who had registered on BBM.com, then you can download the app and begin using the BBM services. If not, here’s what you need to do:
    Download BlackBerry Messenger for Android or iPhone
    Install the app, open it, and enter your email address
    BlackBerry will email you when you’re next in line for access
    The BBM Blog reads, “If you are among the millions that took the time to sign up at BBM.com, you can start using BBM immediately without waiting in line (Samsung customers in Sub-Sahara Africa can download BBM today from the Samsung Apps store. iPhone and other Android users in Africa will be able to download the app in three days’ time.). If you didn’t sign up in advance, don’t worry – we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible.”
    The question still remains as to how much time a new user will have to wait before he gets the approval email from BBM. If it takes too long, some users may just get frustrated and shift to the large library of other messaging apps available.
    The BBM app for iOS and Android was originally scheduled for launch on September 21. The app was pulled back as a lot of users were able to side load it on their smartphones due to the leaked APK.
    The BBM blog reads, “About six million people signed up for information about BBM at BBM.com. As you know, in just seven hours, about one million Android users were using the unreleased version of BBM for Android”.
    Its nice to see that BBM has finally launched and now iOS and Android users can stay in touch with family and friends that refuse to get rid of their BlackBerry. The BBM messaging app has some serious competition as we have a large library of cross platform messaging apps available such as WhatsApp, Skype, Viber, HipChat, Facebook Messanger, Line and more.

    Confirmation: BBM for Android on September 21st, iPhone version on September 22nd

    After a lot of guesswork typical to the rumor mill, BlackBerry has finally put the creatures at peace, by announcing the release dates for the much awaited BlackBerry Messenger for Android and the iPhone. The Android version will be available for download on 21st September (Saturday), while the iPhone version goes Live a day later.
    In an update post regarding the BlackBerry Messenger availability, the BlackBerry says, “BBM will be available as a free download for Android smartphones running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) beginning at 7AM EDT on September 21. BBM for iPhones running iOS 6 and iOS 7 will become available for each market on the App Store schedule of 12:01 AM local time on September 22.”
    BlackBerry has however, not mentioned anything about Samsung’s claim that BBM will be exclusive for Samsung Galaxy smartphones for a certain period. (Read details here)
    At the moment, there are 60 million users on BBM, and is available exclusively on BlackBerry smartphones. It will be interesting to see how it shapes up when competing with the more established messenger apps - WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger etc.

    Apple iWork suite free for new iOS devices

    At the iPhone launch event, Apple has announced that the iWork suite of productivity apps would now be free to download for new iOS devices. This was announced by CEO, Tim Cook, as he went through the presentation about Pages, Keynotes and Numbers. All new iOS devices - iPhones, iPads and the latest iPod Touch, will get the free iWork suite as an optional download.
    When setting up a new iOS device, users are generally prompted with the option of downloading a bunch of free Apple apps, includingiBooks and Find my iPhone. In the same way, users will now find Pages, Keynotes and Numbers in the same list, with the downloads being completely optional.
    At the moment, iWork apps are available for iOS devices for Rs 550 each, with individual payment and download for Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
    There is still no clarity on whether this suite of productivity apps will be free for users of existing devices, or whether this will happen with the iOS 7 update, if at all.
    This is Apple’s way of trying to push iOS devices to new users, including the enterprise, by offering the complete suite of productivity apps to devices at the time of setting them up. The fact that they are now being offered for free is to counter Microsoft’s Office suite of apps, with Office now available for the iPad with the Office 365 subscription.

    VLC video player comes back to iOS as a free download

    VLC, arguably the most popular third-party video player in existence, is now available for download on the Apple App Store. The VLC video player app had exited the Apple App Store in 2011 because of conflict between the tightly controlled Apple ecosystem and its open-source nature. The only presence VLC had on the App Store during the video player’s absence was in the form of a streamer app that let users stream videos off their PC on to their Apple device. However, the VLC player has continued to remain very popular on the Android mobile OS.

    The new VLC app supports devices running iOS 5.1 onwards and supports all popular video formats like MKV, 5.1 audio and also subtitles. The app also has a Wi-Fi upload feature that lets users upload videos from their devices to a web server and download them on to other devices. An additional similar feature is ‘Download from Web Server’ that lets users download videos from a web server to their Apple device. The VLC app also supports Dropbox integration and allows you to browse through your Dropbox folders and sub-folders for videos.
    The VLC video player app is now free to download on the Apple App Store.

    WhatsApp finally goes free on iOS with annual subscription

    After years of surviving as a $0.99 (Rs. 58 approx.) paid app, WhatsApp, the popular messaging app has finally gone free to download for Apple devices. From today, iPhone and iPad users will be able to download WhatsApp for free and use it without paying anything for the first year. The second year onwards, users will have to pay an annual subscription amount of $0.99. This is the same system employed by WhatsApp on Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.

    WhatsApp has been at the top of the popularity charts despite tough competition from other IM apps like Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, Hike, WeChat and Viber. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum claimed back in April that his company saw more activity than Twitter with over 200 million active monthly users and about 20 billion messages sent and received daily.

    The popularity of WhatsApp means that it is also subject to plenty of acquisition rumours. Last year, it was forced to publicly deny that it was being bought by Facebook and this year after news of a $1 billion Google buyout began doing the rounds, WhatsApp had to again pour water on those rumours
