Instant messaging platform WhatsApp now has 30 million active users in India, adding about 10 million users in the last one month. In August 2013, WhatsApp had claimed to have 20 million monthly active users in India and 300 million users globally. While WhatsApp continues to enjoy massive popularity in India, the instant messaging platform has also entered into a partnership with TaTa Docomo to offer unlimited WhatsApp usage to users.

As per the partnership, Tata Docomo is offering two packs to its prepay GSM customers, priced at Rs 15 and Rs. 30 with validity until 15 and 30 days respectively.

"These data packs will enable Tata Docomo prepay GSM customers to enjoy the hugely popular WhatsApp with specially customised value for money data plans and with unlimited use," the company said in a statement.

"Standing tall on the fundamental tenet of simplifying consumer's life, dedicated WhatsApp data packs serves up a hassle-free experience for our consumers with a clear focus on enriching the data experience," Tata Docomo Head VAS Marketing Rishimohan Malhotra said.

"This partnership allows us to tap into Tata's market presence in India and continue WhatsApp's significant growth as the global leader in the mobile communication space," WhatsApp Co-Founder Brian Acton said.

It's notable WhatsApp had entered into a similar partnership with Reliance Communications (RCom) last year. Under the plan, RCom offered unlimited access to WhatsApp on prepaid Reliance GSM network at Rs. 16.

Even as WhatsApp continues to dominate the IM segment in India, other instant messaging applications such as Line, Hike, ChatOn and BlackBerry's BBM are also gaining popularity. Japan-based Line recently announced crossing 10 million milestone in India.

Samsung's ChatOn, which surpassed 100 million users in September, rode high on 'a steady growth' in countries like India and China. Newly launched Viber recently went past 15 million users in India. Hike is also aiming to compete with WhatsApp with its recent $7 million investment boost.

Tata Docomo has introduced a new plan for its CDMA postpaid customers. Under the new monthly plan priced at Rs. 1,299, Tata Docomo users get unlimited local and STD calls (including landlines), 3GB of data and 3000 messages (local & national) per month.

Post 3GB usage, users will be charged Rs. 0/30 per MB. After 3,000 messages, Re. 1 for local message and Rs. 1.50 for national and Rs. 5 for international messages will be charged. On roaming on other networks, users will be charged Re. 1 per minute for incoming calls and Rs. 1.50 per minute for local and STD outgoing calls. For data on roaming, users will be charged 10p per 10KB.

Tata Docomo slashes 2G and 3G data rates by 90%

After Vodafone, Airtel and Idea, Tata Docomo earlier this week announced slashing 2G and 3G mobile data rates by up to 90 percent. From July 1, Tata Docomo will be charging 1p per 10 KB, down from 10p per 10 KB. The offer is available for GSM subscribers of Tata Docomo across 19 circles.

On recharge of Rs. 126, Tata Docomo is offering 2GB of 2G data for 30 days. The operator is giving 2.5 GB and 3GB of 2G data for Rs. 149 and Rs. 249 respectively. For 3G, the company is offering 2GB for 30 days at Rs. 255.

"This (the offer) will increase data penetration across segments and a 90 per cent discount will serve as a customer friendly yet clear differentiator for our customers," Tata Docomo's Head of Marketing Gurinder Singh Sandhu says in a statement.

"Once customers exhaust their free 2G or 3G data quantum, they can continue to access high speed mobile Internet by paying only 1 paise per 10 kb instead of the earlier 10 paise per 10 kb data," it added.

Tata Docomo's price cut of 2G data rates seemed inevitable after telcom giants such as Vodafone, Airtel and Idea Cellular announced massive price cuts in their data charges by up to 90 percent.

The recent price war in 2G segment is certainly going to benefit smartphone users and other mobile users looking for cheap Internet plans. From companies' point of view, the move will help increase subscribers base in the country.

According to Mahesh Uppal, director, Com First (India), says, “The companies are trying to expand the over-all appeal of data services. This means making them affordable to low income users of 2G.” However, Mr. Uppal added it was unlikely that the move will help telecom companies recover costs and improve margins.
